Quakers Open HCAC Series with Manchester
RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College baseball team fell twice to Manchester University on Saturday in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader in Randal R. Sadler Stadium.

The HCAC leading Spartans won the first contest 13-8 and took the second game 1-0.

In the opener, Manchester grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the first. The Quakers were able to cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single by Ted Williams, who now holds Earlham's all-time lead in that category with 110.

After the Spartans added a run in the fourth to lead 3-1, the Quakers responded to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Alex Arovits opened the rally with a single and he scored on a triple by Devin Spurgon. Josh Parr followed with a single and it was 3-3.

Williams blasted a long homer to left to put the Quakers on top 4-3 in the fifth. It was the 13th homer for Williams in his career, which puts him in a tie for third all-time in Earlham history.

Manchester scored five times in the sixth and four in the seventh to build a 12-4 advantage.

The Quakers were able to answer with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Arovits had a sacrifice fly and Spurgon drilled a three-run homer to left to make it 12-8.

The Spartans added the final run in the ninth. Earlham starter Nate Hube (3-4) took the loss for the Quakers.

Pitcher's Duel

A ninth-inning run in the second game was the difference for the Spartans (23-11, 17-4) against Earlham starter Matt Brankle.

Brankle (2-4) pitched to three batters in the ninth before giving way to T.J. Plummer, who stopped the rally at one run. Brankle allowed just the one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Plummer had a pair of whiffs.

Parr had a double for the Quakers, who had six hits.

The Quakers celebrate Senior Day on Sunday as they finish the HCAC series with Manchester. Earlham's nine seniors will be honored prior to the single game that starts at noon.
