Men’s soccer finishes deadlocked with Emory & Henry

Drew FitzGibbon

RICHMOND, Ind. – Junior Drew FitzGibbon netted both goals for Earlham College men's soccer as the Quakers rallied to post a 2-2 tie against Emory & Henry College, Saturday afternoon at Matlack-Messer Field in second day action in the Raven-Quaker Classic.

Emory & Henry (0-1-1) struck first in the eighth minute when Jeff Hurlock scored from near the top of the 18-yard box. Earlham managed to tie things up before the end of the half as FitzGibbon notched his first of the season in the 33rd minute, off a forwarding pass from Ryoji Fusegi.

Casey Widdifield put the Wasps back in front in the 51st minute off an Emory & Henry set piece. Widdifield headed Massimo Tager's corner kick past Earlham keeper Henry Wildes, giving Emory & Henry a 2-1 lead.

FitzGibbon knotted things up in the 85th minute when he buried a shot from just outside the six-yard box past E&H keeper Morgan Moser. Conner Kimball threaded a beautiful centering pass from along the endline right through the middle to FitzGibbon, earning the assist.

Neither team was able to capitalize on its opportunities during the two overtime periods, putting the game into the books as a tie.

Earlham amassed 19 shots to Emory & Henry's eight, with the Quakers recording four corner kick attempts to the Wasps' two. Wildes finished the day with three saves while Moser notched six.

Earlham returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 4, when it travels to Crawfordsville, Ind., to face Wabash College. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
